I love playing with them through the arts, and I love introducing them to new ideas and new ways to use their minds, their hands, and objects around them. Many of these children have been dealing with their illness for years and its intensity and demand...

Teaching Volunteer FAQs

What do you mean by 'interviews'?

We always meet with potential volunteers first, not just to make sure that you are a great fit for Arts For Life, but just as importantly, that AFL is a great fit for you. Consider it an informational interview - we tell you all about our programs, what it's like to volunteer, and the training process, and you tell us more about yourself. If it's not the best fit to teach art at that time, we can tell you about the many other volunteer opportunities we offer at AFL.

What is the time commitment for teaching volunteers?

If the time is right and you have found the perfect volunteer opportunity with AFL, we ask for a weekly commitment of 3-4 hours. We also hope you will make a minimum nine-month commitment. If you cannot make that commitment at this time, we may have other teaching opportunities available on a periodic basis!

I'd like to teach art. Can I start next week?

Many of our volunteers are surprised by how long it takes to simply be able to teach art in the hospital! The overall process can take between 1 and 2 months to complete, from initial interview with AFL to your first solo teaching shift.

We send all of our volunteers, Fellows, and staff through hospital volunteer training in addition to our thorough Arts For Life training. This includes a hospital orientation and interview, immunizations check and TB testing, background check, and hospital training - and that's not including AFL's training sessions and shadowing!

We want you to be fully prepared for this special opportunity to work with our young patients and families. We offer lots of support to our volunteers, through training and preparation to ongoing programming and emotional support.
